Ants are some of the smallest creatures in the world, but many ants grow to be several millimeters or more in length. Ants can vary in size depending on the type of ant, where they live, and what time of year it is. For example, desert ants tend to be larger than most other types of ants because they adapt to living in dry conditions that often result in desiccation.

Generally speaking, though, black sugar ants get really small. The size of the little black sugar ant is between 1/8 and 3/8 of an inch long (3 to 10 mm) with a distinctively large abdomen. However, its small size makes it difficult to see in your home. The ants can be found throughout North America and are usually brown or black. As they are relatively new to the United States, they vary greatly in shape and size according to their habitat.

These ants eat sweets, such as simple sugars or honeydew, which are the sweet secretions of aphids and scale insects. They also feed on leftover vegetable matter. When sweets are scarce, they will consume even paper tissue or moistened leaves. When they are not raiding the nests of other ants, their diet consists of fungi and grains found in manure or compost piles.

Little black sugar ants are most often seen during their mating season from August through early November. Their population grows during this time due to a warming trend in winter temperatures.

Little sugar ants spend their days munching on sweets like cellulose-rich plant material, honeydew, aphids, and even some fruits like citrus trees.
